Abstract
Inner-societal threats of violence, global armed conflicts, increasing societal uncertainty−the challenges to achieving peaceful coexistence are increasing. In contrast, peace education is poorly institutionalized in German-speaking countries. Expectations of peace education in theory and practice are growing. Consequently, despite a wealth of practical experience in recent decades, many important issues have not been systematically addressed.
The strategy conference aims to develop peace education further as a discipline and to promote international networking. The conference will address three key topics: theoretical and conceptual foundations and curricular developments; decolonial and power-critical perspectives; and peace education in the context of crises and wars. These three thematic priorities will contribute to the deepening and development of the important foundations of peace education within and across disciplines, as well as identifying further research areas and gaps for new projects.
The aim of the conference is to develop scientifically sound foundations and standards for peace education, providing inspiration and guidance for its application in research and practice. The conference also contributes to enhancing the profile of peace education within the German-speaking peace and research landscape.
The strategy conference will comprise working groups and joint plenary discussion rounds. A follow-up format will consolidate cooperation relationships and ensure the continuation and implementation of research and transfer projects. Contributions from participants will be published in an English-language anthology in 2026. In line with the objectives of the conference, the publication will present innovative ideas on the principles of peace education.
