Im Februar 1914 nahm das Institut für Internationales Recht an der Universität Kiel, das seit 1995 stolz den Namen Walther Schückings trägt, seine Arbeit auf. Es ist damit das älteste universitäre Institut für Völkerrecht überhaupt. Das 100-jährige Jubiläum im Jahr 2014 haben wir mit einer Reihe von Veranstaltungen und Veröffentlichungen begangen und uns über die Mitwirkung von Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus dem In- und Ausland, von Ehemaligen, Angehörigen und Freunden des Instituts wie auch von unseren Studierenden gefreut!
At the beginning of February 1914, barely five months before the fatal shots that rang out in Sarajevo and reverberated around Europe, the „Institut für Internationales Recht“ (Institute for International Law) started its work at the University of Kiel. From the very outset the role that public international law can play in the safeguarding of peace has been a central theme at the Institute, which was named after its former director Walther Schücking, the great pacifist and judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice, in 1995.
In keeping with this tradition, to celebrate the hundred year anniversary of the Institute we are holding an academic conference entitled „100 Years of Peace through Law: Past and Future“ from 19 to 21 September 2014. We want to not only focus on the historic development, but also primarily explore current challenges to the ius contra bellum and the ius in bello.
